Cottage of the Month-March '06

Welcome to beautiful Westlake Village, CA....

Residing in her beautiful Westlake Village home, in Southern California for the past ten years, Carol has a growing passion for sewing, beading, card making, gardening, and collecting, and her home reflects her many interests.

Talented and incredibly creative, Carol's home is filled with unique vignette's, from one room to the next. Upon one wall, she displays a pair of gorgeous vintage 1940's beaded handbags well kept inside of a pair of display frames. In her living room, she uses a large glass enclosed display case as a coffee table. Quite the conversation piece, it's filled with a lovely array of her favorite old Paris themed buttons and vintage jewelry she's found during flea market outings. In her kitchen, you can find a collection of vintage molds and cookie cutters on the wall, as well as a row of vintage iced tea pitchers atop her kitchen cabinet.

Quite the collector, Carol has armoires filled to the brim with old vintage quilts, chenille and piles of floral barckloth. Many of these fabrics she will use to make her one-of-a-kind jackets and pillows. Displayed thoughout her home, Carol thoughtfully displays her collections of glass candy dogs, jadite, McCoy pottery, old jewelry and brooches, just to name a few of the items she collects.

Carol's favorite place to shop is garage sales. "You get the best bargains & find unusual items that you can redo or repair. You can also change them into something other than what they were intended for". Her favorite place to go antiquing is an antique mall in Agoura, CA. Carol says "The hunt is the best part!"

Attributing her decorating influences from magazines including Martha Stewart "Living" & Mary Engelbreit's "Home Companion", Carol considers her decorating style to be ecletctic, with a mix of everything from country to contemporary. One of her favorite decorating tricks is to "Pick up extra chandelier lampshades at a garage sale. Cut out silk fabric strips with pinking shears. Gather them and glue to the bottom of the shade. You can add some beads strung on wire." Carol did this in her dining room...Cost her about $5.00. -JG
